Last month we attended CalSAE’s Elevate Annual Conference in our hometown of San Diego, CA.
We had a great time attending and networking while also receiving some great education. Here were some of our top takeaways:
- The Opening Experience was presented by Sarah Prevette and covered cultivating creativity and entrepreneurship. One fun idea we learned about was ‘Crazy 8’s’. Derived from the 685 exercise by Brynn Evens, we were told to fold a piece of paper 8 times, set a timer for 40 seconds and write down your ideas within that time frame. Try it out!
- Becky Lunders of teamWorks presented ‘Recruit, Retain & Recognize Your Way to Membership Growth’. Here we learned about challenges for associations, recruitment wheels to determine where to go for new members, and tips for how to keep your members engaged.
- Another session that hit close to home, with Blue Sky being a technology company, was ‘How to Maintain High Touch Relationships in High Tech Times’ with Sarita Maybin. What did we find most important? Positive communication, tips on how to get people to respond to your emails, and the Rule of 3, which was that the third time you had to clarify something, you pick up the phone and call!
- Last but not least, ‘Building Strong & Engaged Teams’ with Daniela Devitt and Scott Dear from the CA Employers Association provided many interesting stats – from the high percentage of people who will be retired within the next five years, resulting in millenials making up a majority of the workforce, to women being more engaged at the workplace than men.
We can’t wait until next year’s CalSAE! In the meantime you can find us presenting at their TechTalks in Sacramento in June, and at ASAE’s Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City in August!
