We’re kicking off the new year with our Team Spotlight series! The Blue Sky eLearn team is comprised of an array of talented, unique individuals who ensure our clients succeed in providing valuable lifelong learning experiences.

Meredith Taylor is a Learning Strategist on our Learning & Development team. Our clients tap into Meredith’s extensive expertise to help strategize and refine their educational programs.

Meredith was selected to be part of The Learning Guild’s Thirty Under 30 cohort in 2022! This program recognizes 30 young professionals who embody the knowledge, skills, and drive needed by today’s modern learning leaders. Throughout the year, Meredith will be participating in multiple learning and development opportunities, including in-person and virtual experiences.

We hope you enjoy getting to know a bit more about Meredith and the work she’s doing here at Blue Sky eLearn!

Tell us about what you do at Blue Sky eLearn.

I am a learning strategist on the Learning & Development team at Blue Sky eLearn. I help organizations and associations strategize learning solutions that are customized to their individual needs. I also project manage some of our instructional design projects and get to work with clients in creating their education content.

How did you get your start in instructional design?

Ironically, through a paperwork error. I was accidentally offered a job that was meant to be offered to someone else, but they gave me a shot. I had never heard of instructional design methodologies, eLearning, or an LMS before.

I spent an entire year asking questions, challenging the norms, and taking advantage of every learning opportunity I could find. It quickly became clear to me that learning strategy and instructional design are my passion and I’m so grateful for my non-traditional journey that brought me here.

What led you to Blue Sky? Why did you decide to join the team?

At a previous role, I had the BEST experience working with Amanda, Melissa, and Stacy, that I knew I wanted to be part of this company one day. It was evident BSE cared about their employees and had worked to build a strong culture. I had left my previous organization in August 2021, but stayed in touch with the BSE team and applied as soon as I saw my current position posted.

What do you love about the work you do?

I love helping organizations create long-term learning strategies that set them up for success and are sustainable for them to maintain on their own. I feel like I have done my job well when an organization is able to continue implementing the strategy I created using their own resources. I think learning should be accessible to all and shouldn’t be cost-prohibitive to the organization.

What advice would you give to someone trying to get started in the continuing education industry?

Learn as much as you can! Sign up for webinars, go to conferences, network on LinkedIn with the big names, and ask questions. I feel like our industry is exceptionally supportive and open to collaboration which creates a strong community overall. Also consider joining organizations like The Learning Guild and the Association for Talent Development.

What do you enjoy most about working with associations and non-profits?

I love that they are mission-oriented. Whether it’s an association focused on helping others run effective meetings or a non-profit focused on serving the children of the world, they have a clear focus for their organization. I love working to align their education strategy and content to their overall mission to create a more cohesive learner experience.

What is the top instructional design tip that you share with our clients?

Processes are your friend! Templatizing as many aspects of your process as you can will make content creation much more efficient.

What is one thing you wish clients knew about our learning and development services?

I wish our clients knew how much time and effort goes into creating their content and strategy behind the scenes. Not every step in the process results in a tangible deliverable, like reviewing source materials, but they set the framework for the final deliverable. The final one-hour eLearning module we deliver is the result of many hours spent reading your source materials, creating learning objectives, writing scripts, designing storyboards, and developing prototypes.

What is a Fractional Chief Learning Officer (FCLO)? And why should an association consider implementing one?

We offer fractional chief learning officer services to our clients here at Blue Sky eLearn. The FCLO works directly with our client’s leadership and other key stakeholders and is responsible for developing a long-term learning strategy, customized to their individual needs. In addition to the strategy, the FCLO also usually develops a project playbook, conducts focus groups, outlines a marketing plan, and analyzes competitors.

An FCLO is a great asset to any association that doesn’t have a Chief Learning Officer, or is looking to realign their education department. Adding an FCLO from Blue Sky eLearn to your project team when launching a new education initiative can help ensure your strategy is aligned to your organizational goals and develop a replicable learning model that is easily repeatable. Associations should also consider using our FCLO services to audit their existing content, delivery methods, and processes if they are looking to ways to streamline their approach.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you like to do for fun.

I live just outside of Indianapolis, Indiana with my husband, son, and two dogs. I graduated from Butler University and have worked in the non-profit and association spaces. In my free time I love to bake cookies and have hopes of one day opening my own storefront. If I’m not in the kitchen, you’ll probably catch me watching Michigan football (Go Blue!), Butler basketball, or the latest true crime documentary. I’m a huge Dave Matthews Band fan and enjoy going to concerts whenever I can.
